Protect Your Children and Loved Ones This Holiday Season

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission publishes a monthly newsletter listing recalls and product safety news. The November 2008 list of recalls is quite daunting indeed. Below is the list replete with links for further details:

Stainless Steel Pots Recalled by Ocean State Jobbers Due to Burn Hazard

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Ocean State Jobbers Inc., of North Kingstown, R.I., is voluntarily recalling about 7,000 Century Cookware Stainless Steel Stockpots. The stainless steel pots have metal handles that can detach during use, posing a serious burn hazard to consumers.

JCPenney Recalls Arizona® Newborn and Infant Pants Due to Choking Hazard

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), JCPenney Co., of Plano, Texas, is voluntarily recalling about 24,000 Arizona® Newborn and Infant Denim Pants. The metal snap at the waist can detach posing a choking hazard to infants.

Heavy Duty Acidic Cleaner Recalled by DuPont Due to Leaking Cap; Poses Risk of Severe Skin Irritation

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), DuPont, of Wilmington, Del., is voluntarily recalling about 20,000 Heavy Duty Acidic Cleaner Bottles. Pressure can build up in a full or nearly full bottle of the acidic cleaner when it is stored in elevated temperatures over an extended period of time, which can result in the cleaner leaking from underneath the cap. If the product comes into contact with skin, it can cause severe skin irritation.

Major Retailer Agrees to Pay $500,000 Civil Penalty for Failure to Report Hazardous Outdoor Candles

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today that IKEA North America Services LLC, of Conshohocken, Pa., has agreed to pay the government a $500,000 civil penalty. The penalty, which has been provisionally accepted by the Commission, settles allegations that the company failed to immediately report incidents about defective outdoor candles.

Candela Recalls Candles Due to Fire and Burn Hazards; Sold Exclusively at Anthropologie Stores

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Candela Group, of New York, N.Y., is voluntarily recalling about 225 Anthropologie Tin Candles. The candle flames could flare up out of the tin container during the burning of the last half inch of wax, posing a fire and burn hazard.

ImagiPLAY Recalls Bead Maze Toys Due to Laceration Hazard

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), ImagiPLAY, of Boulder, Colo., is voluntarily recalling about 500 Bead Maze Toys. The trees on the toys can detach, exposing a metal screw. This poses a laceration hazard to young children.

Watts Water Technologies Recalls Rotor and Shaft Assemblies Due to Fire Hazard

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Watts Water Technologies Inc., of North Andover, Mass., is voluntarily recalling about 15 EDP 3112 Rotor and Shaft Assemblies. If the assembly was installed in a fire suppression system and remained in a closed position, sufficient water might not have been available in the event of a fire. This posed a fire hazard to consumers.

Near Strangulation of Child Prompts Recall to Repair Window Blinds by Green Mountain Vista

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Green Mountain Vista Inc., of Williston, Vt., is voluntarily recalling about 7,300 Insulated Black-Out Roller Shades and Insulated Roman Shades. The black-out roller shades and insulated roman shades have a continuous looped bead chain that when not attached to the wall or floor, hangs loosely by the blind, posing a fatal strangulation hazard to children.

Strangulation Death of a Child Prompts Recall of Roman Blinds; Sold Exclusively at IKEA

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), about 670,000 IRIS and ALVINE Roman Blinds (an additional 4.8 million were sold outside of the United States), sold exclusively by IKEA Home Furnishings, of Conshohocken, Pa., are being voluntarily recalled. Strangulations can occur when a child places his/her neck in an exposed inner cord on the backside of the roman blinds.

Brownie’s Third Lung Recalls Air Compressors Due to Drowning Hazard

 

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Brownie’s Third Lung, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is voluntarily recalling about 1,000 Air Compressors. The air compressor’s components can fail, which could cause a stoppage of air flow. This poses a risk of drowning to users.

Target Recalls Dive Sticks Due to Impalement Hazard

 

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Target, of Minneapolis, Minn., is voluntarily recalling about 365,000 Dive Sticks. The recalled dive sticks could remain in an upright position, posing an impalement hazard to young children. CPSC banned pre-weighted dive sticks in 2001.

Children’s Hooded Jackets with Drawstrings Recalled by R&D International Due to Strangulation Hazard

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), R&D International Inc., of Salida, Colo., is voluntarily recalling about 1,500 Young Colors Children’s Hooded Jackets. The jackets have drawstrings through the hood and at the waist. Children can get entangled in the drawstrings that can catch on playground equipment, fences or tree branches. In February 1996, CPSC issued guidelines (pdf) to help prevent children from strangling or getting entangled on the neck and waist drawstring in upper garments, such as jackets and sweatshirts. From 1985 through June 2008, CPSC received reports of 27 deaths and 70 non-fatal incidents involving the entanglement of children’s clothing drawstrings.

GE Recalls to Inspect and Repair Wall Ovens Due to Fire and Burn Hazards

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), GE Consumer & Industrial, of Louisville, Ky., is voluntarily recalling about 244,000 GE®, GE Profile™, Monogram® and Kenmore® Wall Ovens. The extreme heat used in the self-clean cycle can escape, if the wall oven door is removed and incorrectly re-attached by the installer or the consumer. This can pose a fire and burn hazard to consumers.

Lithium-Ion Batteries Used with Bicycle Lights Recalled By DiNotte Lighting Due to Burn Hazard

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), DiNotte Lighting, of Hampton, NH, is voluntarily recalling about 1,700 DiNotte Lighting Lithium-Ion batteries used with bicycle lights. A loose wiring connection and improper venting can cause the battery to overheat, posing a burn hazard to consumers.

Cobra Electronics Recalls Children’s Two-Way Radios with Rechargeable Batteries Due to Chemical Burn Hazard; Sold Exclusively in Toys “R” Us Stores

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Cobra Electronics, of Chicago, Ill., is voluntarily recalling about 8,000 Children’s Two-Way Radios. The rechargeable batteries in the radios can leak electrolyte, posing a chemical burn hazard to consumers.

Swim ‘N Score Dive Sticks Recalled by Modell’s Due to Risk of Impalement Injury to Children

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Modell’s Sporting Goods, of New York, N.Y., is voluntarily recalling about 130 CORAL Swim ‘N Score Pool Stix. Children can fall or land on these dive sticks in shallow water and suffer impalement injuries. Eye and other facial injuries are also possible. In April 2001, CPSC banned certain types of dive sticks.

CPSC Clarifies Certification Requirements

On Monday, November 10, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a final rule by unanimous vote, addressing the conformity certification required for consumer products subject to safety rules under CPSC jurisdiction. The Commission addressed three major issues: 1) who should supply the certificate; 2) how the certificate can be filed; and 3) CPSC enforcement of general certification.

JA-RU Recalls Toy Trains Due To Choking Hazard

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), JA-RU Inc., of Jacksonville, Fla., is voluntarily recalling about 18,000 My Little Train Classics Toy Trains. The recalled toy contain small parts which can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children.

Lighted Showcases Recalled by Seventh Avenue Due to Fire Hazard

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Seventh Avenue, of Monroe, Wis., is voluntarily recalling about 700 5 Tier Lighted Showcases. The lighted showcase’s plug adaptor can overheat and melt the adaptor’s plastic housing, posing a fire hazard.

Off-Road Motorcycles Recalled by American Honda Motor Due to Risk of Swing Arm Weld Failure

 

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), American Honda Motor Co. Inc., of Torrance, Calif., is voluntarily recalling about 13,000 Honda Off-Road Competition Motorcycles. The weld on the right side of the swing arm can fail, causing the rider to lose control and crash. This could pose a risk of injury or death to riders.

Shop CPSC Toy Safety Tips Before Shopping for Holiday Gifts

The holidays are here and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has its list. Parents and gift buyers are encouraged to check it twice. Today, CPSC issued its annual holiday safety messages, joined by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Safe Kids Worldwide, to remind parents to be diligent when making holiday shopping choices.

Claire’s Recalls Children’s Metal Necklaces Due to Risk of Lead Exposure

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Claire’s Boutiques Inc., of Hoffman Estates, Ill., is voluntarily recalling about 67,000 Best Friends Yin Yang Necklaces Sets. The recalled necklaces contain high levels of lead. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects.

OKK Trading Recalls Toy TVs Due to Violation of Lead Paint Standard

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), OKK Trading, of Los Angeles, Calif., is voluntarily recalling about 2,100 “Mini-Televisor” Toys. Surface coating on the toy television could contain excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.

Toy Xylophones Recalled by King Import Warehouse Due to Violation of Lead Paint Standard

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), King Import Warehouse, of Dallas, Texas, is voluntarily recalling about 144 Toy Xylophones. Surface paint on the toy xylophone contains excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.

Sherwin-Williams Co. Recalls Krylon UV Fabric Protector Due to Respiratory Hazard

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), The Sherwin-Williams Co., of Cleveland, Ohio, is voluntarily recalling about 75,000 cans of Krylon “Outdoor Spaces” UV Fabric Protector. Overexposure to fumes, vapor or spray mist from the product can pose a serious respiratory hazard to consumers.
