The Mafia Godfather, The Bookkeeper and the Lawyer

Sometimes we, as lawyers, take ourselves a little too seriously. So, in an attempt to change that mind set, here’s a joke that someone forwarded to me this morning. It doesn’t make us look too good but it certainly made me smile! Mafia Godfather finds out that his bookkeeper has cheated him out of ten million bucks. His bookkeeper is deaf. That was the reason he got the job in the first place. It was assumed that a deaf bookkeeper would not hear anything that he might have to testify about in court. When the Godfather goes to confront the… Read More

St. Patrick’s Day 2008: Keeping You Happy, Smiling and Safe!

St. Patrick’s Day falls on Saturday, March 15, 2008. What a great party holiday but, with such great fun, comes great risk to life and limb and since my law practice revolves around injury to life and limb, I feel it is my duty to beseech you to be careful this St. Patty’s Day. We’ve got a double whammy here because the risks are intensified by the fact that this holiday, which oftentimes revolves around drinking to excess, also falls on a Saturday — and we all know what happens on Saturday nights! Not only are drunk drivers causing great… Read More

How the Grinch Stole Free Speech

The following posting is copied from the article Intellectual Property Bullies — This Time It Is the Grinch which was recently posted in the always brilliant Consumer Law & Policy Blog. I found it quite interesting and provocative and wanted to share it with you. Dr. Seuss –- or, at least, the lawyers for his estate — are at it again. The victim this time is Teamsters for a Democratic Union, which put articles on its web site and in its newspaper that portrayed Teamster President James Hoffa as the Grinch. TDU used an illustration of the Grinch, and used the distinctive font used in the… Read More

Texting While Driving: Articles, Videos, Links

Last September I posted a blog piece which focused heavily on texting while driving. The situation continues to escalate. Living and driving in Los Angeles really brings to light the flagrant disregard that so many drivers have for their fellow motorists, not to mention pedestrians and bicyclists, whom they do not see when their focus is on texting or dialing on their cell phone. I truly believe that talking on the phone is not so much a distraction as the focus that it requires to text and/or dial while driving. Update: 2009 Law Bans Text Messaging while Driving – See Video… Read More

Japanese Digital Cameras That Can Identify Age and Gender

Well, 1984 has come, gone and returned! Reuters is reporting that the Japanese have invented a digital camera that can identify the gender and age of its subject! Once in production, this camera will make it easier for police to identify criminal suspects. Click here to watch the full report. The camera, which debuted at the Tokyo Securities Show, has a margin of error of plus or minus 10 years. Apparently, the inventors have uploaded over 1 million mug shots to their database. The camera’s software will be able to take the image and match it with those mug shots, thereby… Read More

Airborne Settles False Advertising Lawsuit – Details and Claims Information

Wow, it’s amazing! Airborne, the “cold remedy” du jour, has settled a false advertising lawsuit for $23.2 Million. What galls me is that I take Airborne. Maybe it’s the placebo effect, but I truly believe that it works. In the last 4 months, I started to come down with a cold twice and the symptoms literally disappeared after taking 2 doses of Airborne. This is pretty fascinating stuff, though, and I encourage you to click on the links below for some great reading and viewing. United Press International published the following: CARMEL, Calif., March 4 (UPI) — A California herbal supplement firm… Read More

Well, lo and behold, it had… Read More

Five Insurance Executives Guilty in AIG Fraud Case

Well, there is justice after all. No one, not even the multibillion dollar insurance industry, is above the law. I, for one, am glad to see that major corporate greed and deceit has not gone unpunished. Convictions for, among other things, mail fraud, conspiracy, and false statements to the SEC have humbled at least 5 insurance executives and have hopefully injected indescribable into many other insurnace executives sitting on the sidelines in anticipation of last week’s verdict. Essentially, the government presented evidence that the defendants engaged in a scheme to falsely inflate AIG’s reported loss reserves, a key indicator of… Read More
